John Kirby:
Oregon Marine Board (Guide) License #3965
US Coast Guard Certified
John has over 50 years experience fishing north coastal Oregon, the great rivers, streams, and trophy stillwaters of the Greater Yellowstone Basin of Montana and, more recently, Alaska's Togiak River. Beginner through advanced fly casting and fly fishing instruction is his specialty -- John ran the first Orvis Schools in Montana in the early '70's and was the featured guide for Slim Pickins and George Mendoza on a nationally televised episode of the American Sportsman.
John spends an inordinate amount of time chasing salmon and steelhead on the Oregon coast, so he picked up his U.S. Coast Guard license for guiding in coastal and ocean navigable waters many years ago. He follows the fish, but prefers the coastal river systems such as the Siletz, Nahalem, Yaquina, and the rivers of and tidewaters of Tillamook Bay.
While there are no guarantees, John's experience, personality, and education (he has a B.S. in Cold Water Fisheries & Limnology), combined with his high PFA (Positive Fishing Attitude), work to insure a successful trip!
In Montana, where he no longer guides but still fishes, his favorite fishing is sight casting for those huge rainbow that frequent its trophy stillwaters. A close second goes to finding and fishing the pods on the "Mighty Missouri" below Holter Dam in June, followed by casting hoppers to cutbank browns in August.
Come join me to experience the incredible spunk of chrome bright salmon in Oregon's and Alaska's tidewaters and coastal river systems.
